Mis Roots

This chapter tells the story of Paloma E. Villegas. This story is written in a poem format. This is the first poem that we have read in the Pain and Privelage text. I really enjoyed this format. I think that Paloma's poem ties in a lot of the concepts that we have learned thus far. Paloma discusses have been false identified. She explains that she is not "crunchy tacos or Taco Bell." Paloma has seen her Mexican culture become Americanized and this whole chaptpert is her explaining that she does not identify with he American version of a Mexican an individual. Paloma comes from a family. She has learned from a s"strong woman" . She has roots and has been raised in a strong family. She explains all the ways that she identifies. That her roots have been engraved in her since she was a young girl. She comes from language and theory, dirt and seed, color, and deep bool blue nights. I thought that it was really interesting the way that Paloma explains her identity. She goes further than her background, culture, and ethnicity. She explains all parts that make her up. I think this is a great idenitty text. It made me think about all the parts that make me up. What commonalities I share with Paloma as well as how life for Paloma is different form the americanized version that she is many times classified with. I really enjoyed how she ended the poem by stating that she will travel towards hope. This was a very impactful sentence.
