Identity Short Film

For this experience, I chose to watch the Identity short film that Dr. Hurd shared with the c lass.

Identity

When I first watched this short film, I tried to understand what was occurring and I saw a lot of concepts that we have discussed in our TCH courses. One thing that I noticed was that the individual whom the film surrounds seems very upset and alone. Not only is the mask she is wearing different from her peers, the emotion and posture that her body holds is different from that of her peers. I also noticed that individuals group off based on the type or design of their masks. Everyone has a plain colored mask and is in a group with individuals with that same colored mask. At one point a student even jumps from one group to another by removing their mask and displaying another different colored mask.

I thought it was interesting that when the main character was sketching her family or individuals in their life, and the individual included no faces. I also found it interesting that the teacher or professor at the front of the room seemed to not be wearing a mask.

Near the end of the film when the individual went into the restroom and her mask broke, I found it very impactful had the individual removed the mask and her whole posture and emotion changed. She seemed truly happy and free. I appreciated the commentary at the end of the video which allowed for further clarification on how the individual actually felt.

I think this is a great film to explain identity and the crisis that individuals struggle with while trying to find their identity. I think this is also a great video to connect to the middle school times because individuals in middle school are struggling with identity and all aspects of their life as well as just trying to learn to fit in. I think that this short clip did a great job of representing a school setting and how lonely it can feel to be different than other individuals. I think this also ties in with some of our ELL learners because individuals who are still learning the English language may struggle to work in groups with individuals who speak English. This may cause for an individual to feel left out or lonely similar to how the girl fell in her mask. I thought it was awesome when she said the mask down how individuals looked at her almost shocked at her strength for walking around without a mask.
