Class Discussion

During this class we discussed Chapter 2 of the Pain and Privilege Text.

Micro & Macro Aggression

In class, my group and I worked on thinking about Micro and Macro aggression and how it was displayed in the book. I think that this was a very important concept to start to think about because this idea will most likely be reflected in a lot of the text. We first defined what the idea of micro aggression was. We said this is verbal or nonverbal derogatory comments made towards a group or culture. We found examples of micro aggressions in the text of this chapter. One term that was used was "wetback." This is an extremely derogatory word that is used many times while talking about Mexican individuals. As a class we then talked through other derogatory terms that we have heard and explained the importance of learning these words and being familiar with the terms, so that in the classroom setting we ensure that we don't let these words or these languages be used.

We also talked about macroaggresisons which are racist acts brought onto groups because of their race, ethnicity, culture, or sexual interests. The examples that we talked about in the book were the idea of "passing for white." In class and in our group we talked about the fact that this may have been an idea that was engraved in the minds of these individuals.

Overall, I think that it is important that we keep these thoughts in that back of our minds as we continue reading as well as while we enter the classroom. We must be aware of the micro and macro aggression that takes place in society, social media, and daily life.
