When I was reading through he memoirs that were availble to us, a lot of different titles caught my eye. I was fascinated by the variety of topics that sparked my interest. As I was writing down what interested me about each topics, I noticed that this specific book met a lot of qualifications that I thought matched up with my major.
The list I made included some ideas such as...
6th grade
"not being able to join"
hungry
evicted
lingers
worrisome
The memoir that I chose was "Free Lunch" by Rex Ogle. I chose this memoir because I thought it would help me understand students who are struggling with similar issues. As a teacher, I know that I will face a variety of students who are dealing with a variety of issues. It is my role as a teacher to make these students feel comfortable in the classroom and to aid them in whatever ways that I can. One thing that stuck out to me about this memoir was how in depth the author dives into his feelings about Middle School. I am currently studying to be a middle level teacher. I think that this novel will allow me to understand some emotions that students may be going through during these times. I know that every student experiences things different and that this story may not be identical to someone else's, it will at least give me an idea of how this person felt and what could have helped them feel more comfortable at school. I am excited to read and learn through this memoir. I hope to gain a lot of valuable information as well as learn from Ogle's experiences.
Hi Kayla!
I think it is really great that you put a lot of thought into choosing what memoir you wanted to read and even more so that you made your final choice wanting to gain a greater perspective that can allow you to understand your students.
I also very much agree with you that no two people share the same experiences, though I think that making an effort to look for and learn about different experiences with our students in mind can definitely better our understanding as this allows us to take these things into consideration when thinking about how to best teach our students.
